Custom

Upcycled. One-of-a-Kind. Yours.

There’s nothing more personal than a piece you already love, except one that’s been reimagined with purpose. Our custom option transforms your own clothing into a one-of-a-kind statement with meaningful data and tied to real-world impact.

By upcycling what you already own, you’re keeping textiles out of landfills and making space for creativity over consumption. No two pieces are the same. Each one carries your history, our design, and a story that sparks conversation.

This is more than fashion. It’s a collaboration between you, your clothes, and the causes that matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of clothing can I send for custom orders?

For embroidery, we recommend sending denim or other thick, sturdy materials like denim jackets, canvas jackets, heavyweight sweatshirts, or workwear. These fabrics hold embroidery well and ensure a lasting design.

For prints, we recommend clothing made out of cotton and/or polyester.

We cannot accept skinny jeans, leggings, very lightweight fabrics (like silk or chiffon), or stretchy materials.

If we receive an item that isn’t eligible, we’ll refund your custom order payment and return your clothing to you.

Can you embroider over existing graphics or patches?

We don’t recommend it. For the best results, embroidery should be applied to blank areas of your garment without existing prints, logos, or embellishments.

What size will the design be?

For embroidery, it depends on your garment:

  • Tops that can be opened up (like a jacket): approx. 7” wide by 9” tall
  • Tops that cannot be opened up (like a sweatshirt): approx. 7” x 7” square
  • Pants full length: 3” wide by 21” tall
  • Pants half length: 3" wide by 7" tall

For prints, our designs are sized with a maximum dimension of 9.5" on the longest side. This means the exact size varies by design, but each is scaled proportionally to maintain its original look.

How do you decide where to place the design?

We take care to align each design thoughtfully:

  • Front of tops: 3" from the collar
  • Back of tops: 4" from the collar
  • Back of jackets with a yoke (a horizontal panel that extends from one shoulder seam to the other): 1” below the yoke seam
  • Pants: as high on the pant leg as the pocket allows

Is there a risk of my garment being damaged during customization?

While we take great care with every piece, customization always a small risk of damage. If a garment is damaged during customization, we will refund your payment.

How do I send in my clothing?

When you place a custom order, we’ll mail you a prepaid shipping kit. Simply pack your item in the mailer, attach the included return label, and drop it off at your nearest shipping location.

How long does the process take?

Once we receive your item, expect your finished piece back in 2–3 weeks.

When will my credit card be charged?

Your card will be charged at the time you place your order, before we ship out your prepaid mailer.

Can I request my own design or infographic?

At this time, all custom pieces feature our original Illuminated Threads designs as we are unable to create custom infographics.

If there is a topic or graphic you think should be included on our website, please let us know by contacting audrey@illuminatedthreads.com.

  • Jess wearing the gap custom pant

    the gap

"The gender pay gap affects women every day, so why not wear it on something we wear everyday? Turning a pair of jeans into a statement piece to spark conversation is a creative (and stylish!) way to call out a disparity that’s often hidden in plain sight. I love that the design uses art as advocacy."

    -Jess

  • Beaumont wearing the surge custom jacket

    the surge

"I picked the surge design because of the effect of natural disasters on my own life. My home in western North Carolina was struck by Hurricane Helene, the roof ripped open and the town of Chimney Rock washed away. It’s important for people there to understand that this isn’t just a 'once in a lifetime' storm, but that natural disasters are on the rise due to climate change. I love that I get to wear a cool looking infographic, and instead of explaining the data behind it, I can just show the QR code to anyone interested."

    -Beaumont

  • the map

"We live in a country where gun imagery is so normalized that we have become desensitized to the real, devastating consequences of gun violence. Mass shootings have become a routine part of American life, and the map captures this grim reality. It immortalizes the preventable lives lost due to the absence of adequate gun safety laws. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need stricter policies and we must address this crisis with the urgency and seriousness it demands."

    -Julia

  • Henry wearing the rise custom jacket

    the rise

"I've noticed the physical and social effects of climate change throughout my life—shifts in the seasons, more extreme weather, and increasing conversations about the planet’s future. It’s an issue I’m passionate about and these conversations have shaped my awareness of the issue. I chose this design for its strong visual language and its ability to represent something more than just an interesting graphic. I believe that starting a conversation through an embroidered design allows for a more organic discussion on a tough issue that might otherwise be overlooked or avoided."

    -Henry

  • Audrey wearing the correlation custom pant

    the correlation

"I’m tired of seeing the same tragic headlines over and over again. The data is clear—stronger gun laws save lives. I love that by turning a pair of jeans into a visual statement, I can start conversations that might not happen otherwise. It's a powerful reminder that real change is possible if we’re willing to face the facts and take action."

    -Audrey

  • the pride

“This graphic isn’t just about what laws have passed; it’s about the message that gets sent every time one is introduced. Each piece of legislation marks a moment when someone’s identity was questioned, debated, defended, or stripped away by law. It tracks more than policy; it reveals power dynamics, fear, and the ongoing struggle for belonging. It reminds me that our laws shape who feels safe, welcome, and protected. I’ve been fortunate to live in communities where being LGBTQ+ wasn’t a big deal, but safety in one place doesn’t undo injustice elsewhere.”

    -Julia

  • Barbara wearing the footprint custom jacket

    the footprint

"the footprint design captures the story of how our actions have shaped the planet. This jacket is more than just something to wear—it's a reminder of the world we're leaving to our children. I hope it helps spark the awareness and action we need for a better future."

    -Barbara

  • the reoccurrence

"Growing up, every mass shooting felt like a singular event, each followed by a collective call for change. Unfortunately, mass shootings feel all too common today and the country is becoming more and more desensitized, despite mass shooting casualties continuing to increase. Urgent change is needed and that’s why I chose the reoccurrence."
